Big Al's Chicago Deli

News has been really light lately, so I'm really reaching for something to talk about. I was walking around the Las Vegas airport on Sunday and I found this:

So if you're ever in Las Vegas (or Chicago maybe) let me know and I can try to work the same name discount.

Big Al is down with the Pride

(Big Al and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Mark Coleman)

So I was in Las Vegas last weekend for the night for some rest and relaxation and some other stuff. I happened to be walking through Caesar's Palace and I run into Pride/UFC MMA fighter Mark Coleman. I snapped a picture with him to enter into Big Al's Celebrity Encounter album. I'm now up to 2 celebrities from Las Vegas (previously Hammer 1/06).

Coleman was pretty big. You could tell that he could kick my a$$ just staring at me. Because of that, I didn't bother him to do the Big Al signature pose.

Big Als 200'th Post

So this hasn't been the most spectacular week for Big Al news. I was hoping for something cool to post on this 200th post milestone. Maybe I should pull my website down more often just to get some traction on the website. I hope everybody has a good 3 day weekend!

We do thank all of the viewers for tuning in every few days. 200 down and many more to go!

Big Al's Valentine's Message

In the spirit of Cupid, I want to wish everybody a Happy Valentine's Day. Even though I think today is a completely made up holiday where the top management of Hallmark and expensive restaurants get together to gouge happy couples of their hard-earned cash. J/k!

Big Al likes Luke's experiment

I remember reading Tom Green's (yes the guy from MTV) blog one day and he posted his cell phone number while he was creating his video blog. He wanted to see how long it would take before one of his visitors called him. It took approximately 1 hour before somebody called him.

At the time it never dawned on me that somebody would take the same idea and publicize it. It looks like Luke Johnson has made himself an Internet viral celebrity from doing the same thing Tom Green did last year. I'm not hating at all. I think anybody that takes an idea and materializes it is the real genius.

I've tried calling Luke, but I always get a busy signal. I guess he's getting his goal of having his phone ringing off the hook night and day. I'll try phoning him again later. Good luck Luke! I hope all the mobile carriers call you up and sign you up!

BTW: He looks like Luke Skywalker.

Update: Big Al's Domain Name is down

Looks like the problem has been resolved for most of you. For the rest, the problem should be fixed in the next 24-48 hours as the Domain Name Servers (DNS) are updated.

Big Al says Crack Kills

Just a little note on the past weekend. I hung out with Jo on Friday night and went to the E&O Trading Company. It tasted and felt like Straights Cafe Santana Row - just as bouschey and just as expensive.

On Saturday I went home to Vallejo to hang out with the guys on the golf course. I sunk a 60 yard chip shot for birdie. The overall result was a 103 - not bad for the first day out of the season. I also went to Christie's party on my street. Here's a picture of what everybody missed:

On Sunday, Jo and I went to Steve-o's place in Foster City. We were able to see all the old SCU folks: Ito, Emily, Toan and the big surprise - Ben Yang. The actual game and commercials sucked. 7 more months until the NFL season begins!

Big Al's Airline Adventures

I went down to Long Beach, CA for a day last Sunday. I spent approximately 3 hours in the area before I boarded another plane to come back to the Bay Area. At the end of the day, I thought it was a little crazy how technology in transportation allows somebody to accomplish this. It may be crazy, but not necessarily new to Big Al. Over the last 4 years or so, I've been on many flights, and I thought I would give you some insight as to what I've done in my airline adventures.

American Airline Miles to Date (since Aug 2003):
258,976 miles

Highest American Airlines Status:
AAdvantage Platinum

Craziest flight day ever:
Leaving a vacation in Las Vegas, flying through LAX back to San Jose to repack my bags to fly back to LAX and then finally to London, England.

Single day day-trips:
Bay Area to Los Angeles region and back home (2003 & 2007)
San Jose to Seattle and back (2003)

Short Notice Trip #1:
Going to work on a Friday and getting notice to fly out to Seoul, South Korea the next morning for a week-long meeting.

Short Notice Trip #2:
Going to work on a Tuesday morning and getting on a red-eye flight to Atlanta, GA that night

Worst Delay:
SFO to Chicago but a 4 hour delay in MidAmerica Airport in Belleville, IL just to refuel to fly 20 miles to St. Louis Airport for another 8 hour delay. (August 2000)

Worst Place my Luggage has gone to:
San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO)

# of flights missed because of being stupid:

# of flight almost missed because of being stupid:
- Rome's Airport: going to gate 16 thinking I had seat 72 where instead I should have gone to Gate 72 and had seat 16. I almost missed my flight back to the US.
- San Jose Airport: getting to the airport really early and having breakfast and sitting down at the wrong gate. Luckily they called my name on the intercom.
- San Jose Airport: trying to check-in my bags and necessary computer equipment for a flight to Atlanta with less than 30 mins. My bags weren't guaranteed, but they made it there. I was late because I had to finish a basketball game.

The Business Trip that almost never ended:
I went to Irvine, CA for a supposed day trip in 2003. I ended up staying there from Monday to Thursday with no change of clothes. I did go back home Thursday night only to have to fly back Friday morning for a day trip. I eventually went back all week the next week but with clothes.

Worst experience at a foreign airport:
Coming in from Turino, IT into Orly Airport Paris, France and trying to make my connection at Charles De Gualle airport. According to the locals a bus was supposed to take me at platform 5, but it didn't show up. I ended up taking the subway which barely got me there.

Worse experience at a domestic airport:
Taking the hotel transport in Houston, TX to the airport. Houston has 2 airports and they took me to Houston Hobby (the larger of the 2) when I needed to get to Houston Bush. This was the only time in my life that I intended to get to the airport 2 hours early. Luckily I did because once I got to Bush I almost immediately had to board the flight.

Worst on plane experience:
Making the emergency landing. The flight was to go from Paris to Chicago, but fuel problems made us dump all of our fuel over the English Channel and land us in London.

Worst on plane experience (honorable mention):
The dude that was sitting next to me that was having seizures.

# of celebrities that I sat next to:
1 - Carlton Williamson, NFL All Pro and 3 time Super Bowl Champion of the 49ers
